the jumble of tones and styles laid atop this basic narrative feels like it's trying to please everyone and ends up pleasing no one.

In terms of just a movie -- that I saw with a bunch of children -- the kids love the movie, and the adults just might want to step back.

Rachel Zegler gives it her very very best shot, and she nearly saves it...

This Snow White, emerging in an era of government-sanctioned cruelty, seems to know exactly what it's saying, even if it chooses to speak only in a discreet whisper. It's the right Snow White for this moment.

Gadot's performance is easily the biggest failure of the movie. There are no words for me to describe how absolutely abhorrent she is in the role of the Evil Queen.

Just the right amount of newness and unpredictability is the true magic of Webb's Snow White.

These cursory changes clash with its more modernized lead, and the resulting dissonance is particularly egregious. By stranding Snow White in garish landscapes opposite thinly written scene partners, the movie betrays her.

The new "Snow White" has its own illusions of depth, though not the kind that one can commend.

Though far from a dream come true, this Snow White isn't without its enjoyable aspects. I watched it with a smile and a song, every bluddle-uddle-um-dum somehow injecting my heart with joy, often when I least expected.

Hm? What's that? This Snow White is not a made-for-TV movie shot in Burbank but is instead a theatrically released feature film that cost upwards of $250 million to make? Oh. Oh dear.

The new songs mostly land without being memorable, but Rachel Zegler's spunky, assertive Snow White proves a reasonably refreshing update on 1937's animated princess.

Gloss prevails over heart in nearly every scene, and plot beats feel contrived.

As far as live action remakes go, "have courage, be kind, and fight fascism" is a fitting message for the moment, even if it comes wrapped in a pretty garish package.

It's infuriating enough that Webb and Wilson ride not simply roughshod but seemingly blindfold through a classic, but other innocent fantasy classics are caught up as collateral damage.

In its own way, this one's just as groundbreaking - the rare Disney princess movie where the princess gets to graduate to queen.

Neither good enough to admire nor bad enough to joyfully skewer; its mediocrity is among its biggest bummers.

Presumably one of the reasons to bring actors into remakes of animated classics would be to add a warm-blooded pulse to these characters. Zegler manages that, but everyone else in "Snow White" -- mortal or CGI -- is as stiff as could be.

I had high hopes that "Snow White" would make me happy. Instead, this dopey remake made me sleepy and grumpy.
